MEGANITE Countertops: Cleaning & Maintenance

Posted on 05/07/2010 at 3:46pm

Meganite

MEGANITE has physical properties that prevent food, dirt, bacteria, and germs from penetrating its surface.  Routine cleaning using soap, water, or window cleaner will remote most dirt and stains.  To disinfect, occassionally wipe the surface with equal parts of household bleach and water.  Always towel dry to remote water spots.  Meganite does offer warranties.

Special Care

  • For matte or satin finish countertops, rub the stain with a cleanser like Ajax or Comet and a Scotch-Brite pad with water.  Always rub in a circular motion, then rinse and towel dry.  Occassionally, rub the entire surface with a Scotch-Brite pad to maintain the matte or satin finish.
  • For a semi-gloss finish, us a non-abrasive cleanser with bleach or diluted bleach and rub in a circular motion with a white Scotch-Brite pad.  Dry with a towel and use a non-abrasive polish compound to enhance the surface.
  • For a high-gloss finish, use a sponge and apply a non-abrasive polish compound.  Extremely difficult stains may require hand sanding with 600-grit sandpaper, followed by polishing with a white polish compound using a soft cloth.
  • For MEGANITE sinks and bowls, use a scouring cleanser with a Scotch-Brite pad and water.  Occassionally, fill the sink or bowl with a solution of equal parts household bleach and water.  Let stand for about 10-15 minutes.  Rinse sides and bottom with water after draining.

Preventive Care

  • MEGANITE should be protected from hot pans directly from the stove or oven by the use of hot pads or trivets equipped with rubber-tipped feet.
  • Always place a flame-resistant hot pad or trivet underneath a heat-generating appliance such as a crock-pot or electric frying pan.
  • Some strong chemicals can cause damage to your MEGANITE surface if left in contact for a long time.  Paint removers, oven cleaners, contact adhesive solvent, rust removers, or lacquer thinners should be flushed with soapy water as quickly as possible, rinsed with clean water and dried with a towel.  If you spill nail polish, remove it with a NON-acetone based nail polish remover and soapy water.
  • When pouring boiling water into MEGANITE sinks, run cold water at the same time.  Allow hot grease to cool slightly before pouring it into the sink or garbage disposal.
  • Never cut food directly on a MEGANITE surface.  Always use a cutting board.

Removal of Cuts & Scratches

MEGANITE is easily repaired.  Most cuts and scratches can be removed without hiring a professional.

  • For a matte or satin finish, hand sand the cut or scratch with a 220-grit sanding disc, sanding in a circular motion.  When the cut or scratch is removed, hand sand the area with a 320 or 400-grit sanding disc in a circular motion.  Finally, rub the area with a Scotch-Brite pad.
  • For a semi-gloss finish, sand the cut or scratch as you would for a matte finish.  Follow-up with a white rubbing compound applied with a soft cloth and then rub with a white Scotch-Brite pad.
  • For a high-gloss finish, sand the cut with a 220-grit sanding disc until eliminated.  Follow with a 320 or 400-grit sanding disc and then a 600-grit sanding disc, all in a circular motion.  Buff with a white polishing compound and a low-speed polisher equipped with a wool pad.  Apply a non-abrasive countertop polish.  You can find this polish at most home stores.
