Laminate Countertops: Cleaning & Maintenance

Posted on 05/07/2010 at 3:01pm

Dos: Laminate countertops are more affordable than stone and are relatively durable.  Damage is usually caused by misuse or inadequate maintenance.  Cleaning a laminate countertop is as simple as wiping it down with a wet cloth, spraying a little disinfectant, and wiping it off with a dry cloth.  The cloth you use should be made of a nonabrasive material to keep from scratching the countertop.  Scratches can ruin the countertop’s finish and allow moisture to penetrate, opening it to mold, mildew growth, bacteria, and discoloration.  The cleanser you use should be free of harsh chemicals such as alkalines or acids.  Choose one with a pH of 7, or close.  This is the basic pH of water, and is completely neutral.  Laminate countertops come in a wide variety of finishes and coating designs, each with specific needs and maintenance requirements.  Laminate countertops with sulpted or irregular surfaces should be cleaned with a brush to remote bits of dirt and small particles from the depressed or elongated areas.  Laminate countertops finished with extra gloss require a regular wipe with a mild glass cleaner to keep their finish intact.

Don’ts: Never use your laminate countertop as a work table or cutting board.  While laminate is water and shock resistant, it is not scratchproof.  Use a separate chopping board, and avoid pounding or hammering too hard on a laminate surface.  Never place hot objects, such as hot pans, sizzling dishes, hair dryers, and curling irons, directly on your laminate countertop.  Place hot pans and dishes on trivets or insulated heating pads to protect your countertop’s finish.  Never use abrasive cleaning tools, such as a pumice stone or steel wool to scrub off stains on your laminate countertop.  These will scrape off your countertop’s finish and leave marks.  Don’t use harsh chemicals.  Don’t use products that contain bleach.  If your laminate countertops are a light color, cleaners containing bleach may cause yellowing.

Are there any green friendly countertops?

Posted on 04/27/2010 at 2:25am

The marketplace is still in the process of determining what ‘green’ means.  MEGANITE is aligned with the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system for green buildings.  It has been tested and certified by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute as a Low-Emiting Product for Indoor Air Quality, and the more stringent assessment for Children and Schools.  MEGANITE and its high performance attributes extend product life and allow repurposing of surfaces through routine maintenance/repairs eliminating unnecessary contribution to landfill.

Architects, designers, and builders currently refer to “green” products as being sustainable.  Products are green or sustainable for several reasons:

  1. The manufacturer of the product is environmentally responsible.
  2. The bi-products of production of the product are being disposed of responsibly and are not negatively impacting the enivronment.
  3. What happens to the product after its expected life span.  For example:  Can it be reused?  Does it disentigrate?  Does it sit in a landfill?

Cambria has a lower carbon footprint when compared to other quartz products that are largely produced in the Middle East, Asia and Europe, requiring greater transportation and carbon resources en route to market.  Cambria also recycles and recovers 100% of the water used in production.  Cambria is Greenguard certified: Cambria is a low emitting product for indoor air quality and suitable for school environments.  Air Quality Sciences, Inc. has also tested Cambria thoroughly for radon and confirmed that Cambria surfaces have NO harmful emissions of any kind.  Quartz is referred to as the natural choice.  Twice as strong as granite, quartz is one of the hardest and most abundant minerals on earth.
